Homelessness help from West Northamptonshire Council

If you are homeless in West Northamptonshire, or could lose your home soon, the council owes you duties under Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996. Call the council today — it asks you to get in touch as early in the day as you can.

How to get help from West Northamptonshire Council now

If you are homeless tonight, or worried you are about to lose your home, contact the council straight away — it cannot turn you away without looking at your case. You do not have to wait until you are on the street: for anyone eligible, the council's duties begin once you are likely to become homeless within 56 days.[48]

Call the council on 0300 126 7000, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.[33] You can also register online (opens in new tab) for help, which the council suggests if you cannot get through by phone, and a member of its Housing Options Team will contact you.[33] In an emergency you can visit its offices in Northampton, Daventry or Towcester during the same hours.[33]

Out of hours. Outside those hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays, call the same number, 0300 126 7000, for the council's out-of-hours service if you have nowhere to stay tonight.[33] If you or someone else is in danger, call 999.

Domestic abuse. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. The council's domestic abuse page lists local services, including the local domestic abuse service Eve on 01604 230311, and the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, open 24 hours a day on 0808 2000 247.[38] You can also contact the Housing Options Team on the council's number.

Sleeping rough. Report someone sleeping rough through StreetLink, which passes reports in West Northamptonshire to the council's Outreach team, or email outreachteam@westnorthants.gov.uk.[39] When temperatures below 0°C are forecast for three nights or more, the council considers opening emergency shelter under its severe weather protocol. That shelter is open to people who would not otherwise qualify for help, such as those with no recourse to public funds.[39]

Free advice is available at any point, including from Shelter, Citizens Advice and the Community Law Service in Northampton, all of which the council names.[41]

What West Northamptonshire Council must do

West Northamptonshire's duties come from Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996 and are the same across England — the general homelessness guide explains each one in detail. In short:

  • If you are eligible and likely to become homeless within 56 days, the council owes you the prevention duty — reasonable steps to help you keep your home or find another before you lose it.[48]
  • If you are already homeless and eligible, it owes you the relief duty — reasonable steps to help you secure accommodation.[48]
  • In both cases it must assess your circumstances and record the steps you and the council will each take in a personalised housing plan.[48]
  • If you are eligible, in priority need and did not become homeless intentionally, the main housing duty can follow once the relief duty ends. The council must then secure accommodation for your household until the duty ends in one of the ways the law allows.[48]

What the council says it does. It assesses your situation in an interview that normally takes 60 to 90 minutes, then agrees a Personal Housing Plan with you.[35] It says it may close your application if you do not complete your actions, so tell your case officer if something gets in the way. Bring proof of identity, income and your tenancy or notice.[35]

A homeless application is not a housing register application. Since 14 October 2026 the council's homes are let through HomePoint. Under its new allocation policy, households owed the main homelessness duty are placed in Band A.[42] The council says successful applicants generally wait a number of years for an offer.[42]

Without a local connection to West Northamptonshire, your case may be referred to a council where you have one — never to a district where you would run the risk of violence, including domestic abuse.[48] Immigration and residence status can affect what help you are eligible for — the general homelessness guide sets out who is eligible.[48]

Temporary accommodation in West Northamptonshire

If the council has reason to believe you may be homeless, eligible and in priority need, it must secure interim accommodation for you while it looks into your case. The duty arises before any decision on your application.[48]

Whatever is provided must be suitable for your whole household. For households with dependent children or a pregnant member, bed and breakfast can be used only where nothing else is available — and then for no more than 6 weeks in total.[48]

What the council says it uses. Temporary accommodation can be a house or flat, bed and breakfast, or a place outside West Northamptonshire, depending on what is available.[37] The council aims to provide self-contained housing, but you may have to share a kitchen or bathroom. Its guide says a hotel would be used only for a short time.[37]

The local picture. Official statistics recorded 672 households in temporary accommodation in West Northamptonshire on 31 March 2026, 322 of them with children.[47] Of the 672, 105 were in bed and breakfast, none of them households with children.[47]

If you think accommodation offered under a duty is unsuitable, you can normally ask for a review. Emergency accommodation provided while the council investigates is challenged differently.[48] The council's guide warns that refusing accommodation it considers suitable may end its duty, so get advice before you refuse.[37]

If you disagree with a decision

Section 202 of the Housing Act 1996 gives you the right to have most important homelessness decisions looked at again.[48] That covers decisions on:

  • your eligibility, or whether you count as homeless
  • priority need, or a finding of intentional homelessness
  • the council bringing a duty to an end
  • whether accommodation offered to you is suitable.[48]

You have 21 days from the date you are told the decision, unless the council agrees in writing to give you longer. A review that goes against you — or one you do not hear back about in time — can then be taken to the county court on a point of law under section 204, again within 21 days.[48]

Asking West Northamptonshire for a review. The council's review pages cover housing register decisions, not homelessness decisions.[45] Follow the instructions in your decision letter, and if your letter gives no address, write to the Housing Options Team at housingoptions@westnorthants.gov.uk within the 21 days, even if you are still gathering your reasons.[35] Keep a dated copy.[48]

Homelessness cases fall within civil legal aid, so a legal aid solicitor can advise on and run a review or appeal at no cost if you qualify. The council names the Community Law Service, which gives legal aid housing advice, including on challenging council housing decisions.[41][63]

A complaint about how your case was handled, rather than what was decided, goes through the council's complaints process first. The council says its homelessness service is overseen by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, not the Housing Ombudsman.[45] That route cannot replace a section 202 review or a section 204 appeal, which have their own strict deadlines.[60]
